Spring 2018 On-Campus Workshop Schedule

This spring we will have a Regular and Effective Contact in Online Courses series and an Accessibility in Online Courses series. Every Friday, we will have a guest speaker. This will be an open forum where some of our most experienced online faculty open up their courses and talk to us about what works for them. There will be plenty of time for questions and answers. Some of the presentations may be hands-on; other presentations will be more conversational. We will meet in the DE Training Room, Library Basement 10, on East Campus, starting at 1:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Feel free to bring a laptop.

Accessibility Series

Mike Smedshammer
  • Friday, April 6, from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Instructional Design Coordinator Mike Smedshammer will review how to create accessible course content within the Canvas Rich Text Editor. This is a great introduction to basic accessibility, and will cover using heading styles (so screen readers can read section headers and body content properly), adding alt tags to images, using color contrast ratios, creating meaningful hyperlinks, and using grids for creating accessible layout. This will be a hands-on workshop.
  • Friday, April 13th, from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Instructional Design Coordinator Mike Smedshammer will review how to create accessible Word Docs, PowerPoints, and PDF files so they can be uploaded into online classes. This will be a hands-on workshop.
  • Friday, April 20th--no presentation
  • Friday, April 27th: from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Instructional Design Coordinator Mike Smedshammer will review basic captioning for online videos. We will look at YouTube and other assistive technologies. By law, videos must be captioned. It's not as hard as you think! Other services can help with this work as well.
