The Odessa Johnson Story
Black History Month - Oral History Special
Earlier this month MJC retiree Wes Page interviewed Odessa Johnson for the Martin
Luther King, Jr. Commemoration event. Their time together led to a fascinating oral
history as Odessa talked about segregation, the circumstances that brought her to
Modesto, how she was the first black teacher at Modesto High School, her involvement
with MJC's EOPS program, running for the School Board and being appointed to the UC
Board of Regents. Sit back and listen to Odessa Johnson talk about her life, the
community, and MJC. She truly is one of our treasures.

Modesto Junior College’s Department of Music presents Electrical Thoughts Virtual Electronic Music Concert. This event will live stream on YouTube Wednesday, March 31st at 7:00 p.m.
The concert will feature original electronic music compositions created by student composers from the Modesto Junior College Music Technology Program. The composers featured will be Bryce Choy, Finn Derksen, August Eppler, Steven Estes and Mathew Murillo. The music will be created using computers, synthesizers, samplers and digital effects. All of the compositions will be virtual performances some with video displays and some with video recordings of live performances. The MJC Music Technology Director, David Dow, will also present some original electronic music compositions.

“Schism: The Art of the Fractured Self”
Artwork by Jay Scantling
Through painting, sculpture and video, Schism: The art of the Fractured Self depicts
and reflects the fracturing and dissociation of identity in the face of trauma and
its reconfiguration through the creative process. Through imagery derived from dreams
and paralleling themes from mythology, the show presents the transformations of the
self in response to adversity and the creation of art as cycles of destruction followed
by renewal. Schism is about the construction of beauty and meaning out of the horror
of overwhelming life experience.

'Strangers'
MJC Photography Student Collaborative Exhibit
"How do you respond to a stranger? Do you quickly cast your eyes downward to avoid
feeling uncomfortable? Or do you look directly into that stranger’s eyes, smile, and
perhaps offer a greeting?
Strangers is a collaborative project between MJC’s Photography, Humanities, and Communication
Departments, and documents how students and staff stepped into each other’s intimate
space to be photographed and interviewed about their experience. If you were asked
to be photographed with a stranger, what would you say?"
