MJC Art Gallery
The Modesto Junior College Art Gallery is an educational resource of the MJC Art Department,
serving Modesto and surrounding communities by showcasing a diverse selection of art
exhibitions. The Art Gallery is committed to celebrating art and culture by featuring
students’ artistic accomplishments, faculty’s ongoing creative research, as well as
solo and group exhibitions by artists working in the state of California and beyond.
Since 1963 students have been able to gain up-close experience with Drawing, Painting,
Printmaking, Sculpture, Photography and Mixed Media Art. MJC students and community
members are invited to engage in conversations with presenting artists during regularly
scheduled receptions and artist talks. These events provide excellent opportunities
to learn not only how art is made, but what motivates artists to create inspiring
new work – a valuable element of an aspiring artist’s education.
The MJC Art Gallery is operated through the efforts of the MJC Visual Arts Club, student
workers and volunteers under the leadership of Gallery Director Chelsea Gilmore.

“Schism: The Art of the Fractured Self”
Artwork by Jay Scantling
Through painting, sculpture and video, Schism: The art of the Fractured Self depicts
and reflects the fracturing and dissociation of identity in the face of trauma and
its reconfiguration through the creative process. Through imagery derived from dreams
and paralleling themes from mythology, the show presents the transformations of the
self in response to adversity and the creation of art as cycles of destruction followed
by renewal. Schism is about the construction of beauty and meaning out of the horror
of overwhelming life experience.

'Strangers' MJC Photography Student Collaborative Exhibit
"How do you respond to a stranger? Do you quickly cast your eyes downward to avoid
feeling uncomfortable? Or do you look directly into that stranger’s eyes, smile, and
perhaps offer a greeting?
Strangers is a collaborative project between MJC’s Photography, Humanities, and Communication
Departments, and documents how students and staff stepped into each other’s intimate
space to be photographed and interviewed about their experience. If you were asked
to be photographed with a stranger, what would you say?"

About the Artist: James is a long time math professor at MJC and this show celebrates his 50th year here As James explains: “In this day of digital photography using vintage Leica film cameras and lenses provides an "old school" look to the iconic images that define Modesto. It is often about the out of the way scenes that we pass by daily without seeing. My effort to capture images of the past and present gave me a new perspective of Modesto, one that I would like to share with others.”
