Fire Academy Program
The MJC Fire Academy is a premier, intensive and physically strenuous 1 semester program to prepare students for careers in the Fire Service. The program at the MJC School of Public Safety, Regional Fire Training Center has been approved by the State Fire Marshal's Office and the State Board of Fire Services as an Accredited Regional Training Program & Fire Science training center.
The Fire Academy provides students with the opportunity to achieve a full breadth of State Fire Marshal certifications inclusive of Fire Fighter I, LARRO, Hazmat Fro & Decon, Low Angle Rope Rescue, etc.

Firefighter I Certification:
The California State Fire Marshal and State Fire Training have developed the certification path to become a State Certified Firefighter I.The Fire Fighter I Certification is issued to those who have completed the Fire Fighter I academic training and certification exams (psychomotor skills exams and cognitive exams). Students currently enrolled in training at the MJC Fire Academy program will automatically be registered for the certification exams and automatically issued certification upon successful completion of the Academy.
MJC Fire Academy Program Estimated Cost
The Fire Academy requires registration with Modesto Junior College and material fees, as well as uniform and rental fees. The total cost of the Fire Academy is approx. $2,500 - $4,112.
Is the Fire Academy Difficult?
Firefighting is a very strenuous and physically demanding job. The course involves a great deal of manipulative training. In addition the fire service requires knowledge of academic subjects from English to math and chemistry. The classroom training is intensive and requires dedicated effort on the part of each student.
What About EMS Training?
Both First Responder Medical and Emergency Medical Technician classes are offered at the Regional Fire Training Center.EMT training is required as a minimum level of training to work on any ambulance as well as most fire departments.
How do I Apply?
Acceptance to the Fire Academy program is through an application process. Prospective candidates are evaluated on the basis of their college and fire experience. Successful candidates will be offered enrollment in the class.
Applications for the Fire Academy are accepted during the semester prior to the Fire Academy, though the exact dates vary each semester. Modesto Junior College offers a California State Fire Marshal accredited Fire Academy program twice per year, during the Fall & Spring semesters.
Acceptance into the Accredited Regional Training Program is by an application process only. The Fall 2024 application period has closed.The next Fire Academy will be offered in the Spring 2025 semester. Please check back for the application period.
Minimum requirements to apply the Fire Academy:
- Completion of FSCI 301 or FTECH 301*
- Completion of EMS 350*
- CPR Healthcare Provider Aid Card
- CPAT Card
*Completion of courses required with a grade of C or better. In-progress courses are not accepted for application.
